Risk Management Seminar

On Tuesday, February 20th 2007, Bruce Wood from RespectEd & Canadian Red Cross came to the SaskTel Sports Centre and presented the importance of practicing risk management practices in sport organizations.

If you are interested in attaining a copy of the powerpoint presentation or the resource manuals he handed out you may contact him at 1-866-773-5777. The resource manual includes many examples of Codes of Conduct, Volunteer Screening processes, Appeal processes and other forms which your organization may be interested in adopting.

Why Risk Management is Important to Sport Organizations:

Verbal and physical abuse by leaders, instructors and coaches is still taking place, sexual abuse happens in many different forms, bullying occurs right in front of adult organizers and abusive hazing practices continue to be condoned or ignored.

Organizations have an obligation to provide a safe environment and to protect participants as best possible from harm, including physical and emotional harm. This includes the harm that may result from harassment, abuse or bullying. Organizations and the responsible individuals within organizations can be held responsible for not ensuring this safe environment. This may constitute negligence and may result in liability for those individual and organizations.
